Single Vision vs. Progressive Lenses: What Is the Difference?

Single vision and progressive lenses are designed for different vision needs. The main difference is the number of viewing ranges built into each lens design.
Single vision lenses support one primary focal purpose, such as distance or near vision. Progressive lenses blend distance, intermediate, and near zones into one lens without a visible bifocal line.
Your prescription and your eye care professional’s recommendation should determine which lens design you order. Convenience and personal preference come after that decision.
What are single vision lenses?
Single vision lenses are made for one primary viewing range. Depending on the prescription, they may be used for:
- distance vision;
- near vision or reading; or
- another single focal range specified by the prescriber.
A single vision lens can still include sphere and astigmatism correction. “Single vision” refers to the lens having one main focal purpose rather than a progressive transition between several viewing zones.
What are progressive lenses?
Progressive lenses are multifocal lenses with a gradual change in power. They generally provide three connected viewing areas:
- Distance: typically through the upper part of the lens;
- Intermediate: through the central corridor, often used for computer and room-length tasks; and
- Near: through the lower part of the lens for reading and close detail.
Unlike traditional lined bifocals, progressive lenses do not have a visible segment line. The changes in power are blended within the lens.
Prescription requirements
A standard distance single vision order commonly uses the applicable SPH, CYL, AXIS, and PD values from the eyeglass prescription.
Near-only single vision orders can be written in different ways. Some prescriptions provide separate near values, while others include an ADD value. Do not calculate or convert the near prescription yourself if the ordering form does not clearly match the document.
A progressive order requires an ADD value. ADD represents the additional near power prescribed for close vision. Do not select progressive lenses or invent an ADD value when it is not included on the prescription.

How the viewing experience differs
Single vision
Because the lens is designed around one primary focal range, wearers can generally look through a broad usable area for the intended task. Someone wearing distance-only single vision glasses may still need a separate near pair or another lens design for sustained close work, depending on the prescription.
Progressive
Progressive wearers learn to direct their eyes and head toward the appropriate area of the lens. Looking through the upper area supports distance tasks, while lowering the gaze accesses intermediate and near zones.
Some peripheral blur or distortion can occur outside the main corridor. First-time wearers may need an adjustment period. The experience varies by prescription, lens design, frame fit, lens positioning, and the individual wearer.

Neither design is automatically better. The appropriate choice depends on the written prescription, intended use, and professional recommendation.
Frame choice matters
Both designs benefit from a stable, comfortable frame. Progressive lenses also need enough usable vertical lens depth to accommodate their viewing zones. A frame that slips down the nose or sits inconsistently can make it harder to locate the intended areas of the lens.
Choose a frame that:
- rests securely on the bridge;
- does not slide during normal movement;
- fits comfortably at the temples; and
- has a lens shape compatible with the selected lens design.
