Lens index describes how strongly a lens material refracts, or bends, light. For the same prescription and comparable lens design, a higher-index material can often produce a slimmer lens profile than a lower-index material.
Index alone does not determine the finished thickness. Prescription power, frame dimensions, lens shape, pupillary distance, lens design, minimum thickness requirements, and the way the lens is edged can all affect the final result.
The four lens index options covered here
1.56 lens index
1.56 is the lowest refractive index among the four options in this guide. It can be a practical everyday choice when the prescription and selected frame do not require a higher-index material.
1.60 lens index
1.60 has a higher refractive index than 1.56. Under comparable prescription and frame conditions, it can often provide a slimmer profile while remaining a balanced option for many orders.
1.67 lens index
1.67 is commonly considered for stronger prescriptions when reducing visible lens bulk becomes more important. The difference is usually more noticeable as prescription strength and lens size increase, but the result still depends on the complete order.
1.74 lens index
1.74 is the highest refractive index among the four options in this guide. It may be considered for eligible stronger prescriptions when minimizing the lens profile is a priority. It is not automatically the best choice for every prescription or frame.
Why a higher index can produce a slimmer lens
A higher-index material bends light more strongly. This allows the required optical power to be produced with flatter curves or less material than a lower-index version under comparable conditions.
The comparison only makes sense when the prescription, lens design, frame, measurements, and finishing requirements are similar. Changing any of those factors can change the final thickness.
What else affects lens thickness?
Prescription strength and type
Minus prescriptions generally become thicker toward the outer edge. Plus prescriptions generally become thicker near the center. As the prescription becomes stronger, material and frame choices can have a more visible effect on the finished profile.
Frame size and effective lens diameter
Larger or oversized frames usually require a larger lens blank. For many minus prescriptions, the additional lens area can increase the finished edge thickness compared with a smaller frame under otherwise similar conditions.
Pupillary distance and frame centering
Your PD determines where the optical centers of the lenses need to sit. When the pupils are far from the geometric centers of the selected frame, more decentration may be required, which can affect the amount of material retained after edging.
Frame shape
Different shapes create different cutting patterns. A deep, wide, angular, or strongly upswept frame may retain more material in some areas than a compact shape with similar overall measurements.
Frame construction
A full-rim frame can conceal part of the lens edge. Rimless and semi-rimless frames expose more of the edge and can also require minimum thickness or other compatibility checks.
Lens design and finishing requirements
Spherical, aspheric, and digitally optimized designs can produce different profiles even when the refractive index is the same. Safety and mounting requirements may also set minimum center or edge thicknesses.
Is the highest index always the best choice?
No. A mild prescription may show little visible benefit from the highest index. The appropriate choice depends on the prescription, frame, optical requirements, appearance preferences, available options, and budget.
A larger index number should not be treated as an automatic quality ranking. It identifies a material property, not the complete optical performance of the finished lenses.

Choosing a frame when lens profile is a concern
For many stronger minus prescriptions, a compact full-rim frame that keeps the eyes reasonably centered can be a useful starting point. Avoiding unnecessary lens width may reduce the amount of material remaining at the outer edge.
