How to Clean and Store Rimless Glasses

A smudge is tempting to wipe away with the nearest sleeve. Take a moment to check for dust first: rubbing grit across a lens can scratch it.

Rimless glasses also have attachment points and may have decorative edges to consider. Follow the instructions supplied with your lenses and frame. If they do not explain how to clean a particular finish, ask before applying a cleaner or washing the pair.

Start with the lenses and a clean cloth

Remove loose dust using the method recommended for your glasses before wiping. Use a clean microfiber lens cloth and gentle pressure. If the cloth is visibly dirty, wash it according to its instructions before using it again. HOYA's care guidance warns against wiping dusty lenses or rubbing them vigorously. HOYA cleaning guidance

Take care around pointed corners and decorations. If reaching a mark would mean bending the glasses or pressing against a fitting, stop and ask for advice.

Check whether washing or a lens spray is suitable

Where the product instructions allow washing, ZEISS describes lukewarm running water, a little pH-neutral liquid dish soap and gentle drying with a microfiber cloth. Use this method only if it is suitable for your frame, finish and lenses.

For a compatible lens spray, ZEISS recommends applying it to the cloth rather than directly to the lenses, to reduce the amount of liquid that collects around attachment holes. Avoid soaking the glasses to remove a stubborn mark. ZEISS cleaning guidance

Household surface cleaners and disinfectants are not substitutes for a cleaner approved for your glasses. HOYA also advises keeping lenses and frames away from hairspray and perfume, and using a clean microfiber cloth rather than tissues or paper towels. HOYA lens care

Make sure the case fits the outline

Use a hard case with enough room for the glasses. Check that it closes without pushing against the sculpted lens tips or decorative details. If you have to press the lid shut, choose a roomier case.

Keep the pair away from heat sources and hot cars, and avoid setting it down lens-side down. Use both hands when putting the glasses on or taking them off. These are among HOYA's recommended care habits. HOYA storage and handling guidance

Leave loose fittings and damage for a closer check

If a lens moves at an attachment point, the glasses suddenly sit differently, or you notice a chip or crack, stop cleaning and get advice. Avoid twisting the lenses, adding glue or tightening a fitting you are unfamiliar with.

Check before using an ultrasonic cleaner too. HOYA lists exceptions for certain materials and lens conditions, so a home machine should not be assumed suitable for a decorated rimless pair. HOYA cleaning cautions
